Older engines often no longer have original parts available to replace what is needed, so at times we need to adapt similar parts to suit or custom make a new part. It's guaranteed that all rubber seals, gaskets, valves, belts, bearings and hoses will need replacing as they deteriorate over time. Don't forget wiring, fuses and other auxiliary parts.
Each restoration is assessed case by case. After inspection and testing the question will be: Recondition the engine, replace the engine or upgrade the engine. Time and budget will also factor in to your decision making.
Another consideration prior to assembly, will be whether this engine will be going into a Show car or daily ride. If it's a Show car, you may want to hide certain parts like wiring, to give the engine bay a clean sleek look.
